Wilbur’s of Maine has always sought to bring the highest quality confections to our customers for the best value. As we have grown, we have produced more of our own confections replacing those made by others. We are a family owned and operated business and strive to create a family atmosphere in both our workplace as well as in our retail stores.
Tom and Catherine started the business in 1983 as a retail establishment on Bow St. in Freeport. At the time, there were only two outlets in Freeport. Tom soon began experimenting with chocolate, developing Wilbur the Moose. Production grew, requiring moves until the factory landed at its current location at 174 Lower Main Street in 2008. Along the way, we added our Brunswick store, which in 2011 moved from the Tontine Mall to Main St. next to Field’s Jeweler’s. Our “Factory Store” was an addition when we moved the production to Lower Main Street in Freeport. This location also features a wide selection of Maine Made foods and products.
Recently, son Andy joined the family business. His enthusiasm and innovations are keeping us all hopping. Andy has developed his own line of meltaway truffles. One example is a Mexican Meltaway; a bite of “melt in your mouth” dark chocolate with a spicy zing. Another new meltaway is the Mud Puppy; a peanut butter meltaway with toffee bits over a layer of caramel.
Tom & Catherine Carty-Wilbur were presented in 2012 with the prestigious Gowell Award. This award is presented every three years by New England Retail Confectioner’s Association(NERCA) in recognition of a member’s contribution to the association and the retail confectioner field. It is considered the highest award that can be given as the recipient is chosen by his/her peers.
